Poor Construction of Sleeper Retaining Wall
This sleeper retaining wall has been poorly constructed and was noted to be leaning at the time of inspection.
The sleepers had been attached to the posts externally instead of internally so the post could do the work of restraining the sleepers from the pressure of the soil and the water behind them.
When using treated timber, only hot dipped galvanized bolts are acceptable.
The chemicals in the treated timber react with untreated metals, causing corrosion.
The building and pest inspectors noted that roofing batten screws had been used to secure the elements together.
If the retaining wall contractor was not licenced there would be no come back for rectification for defective work and the householder will be left with the job that is not fit for purpose.
